Good news if you've been thinking about adopting a pet: Adoption fees for all animals at the Pima Animal Care Center, 4000 N. Silverbell, are being waived for the remainder of March. Sadly, PACC has seen an unusually high number of animals being brought to the shelter—On March 5, the shelter took in 106 animals. Whaaaat? That's ridiculous.

The shelter is open from noon to 7 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. There's still a $15 licensing fee for adult dogs.

And, of course, adopt responsibly. I'm all for saving a few dollars (and animals!) by adopting when fees are waived, but make sure you can afford to care for your new pet.

Cowgirl Rachel Dice gives a barely perceptible nod. The gate swings open.

Dice and her horse Katie shoot forward, angling to the right where a barrel waits amid dry mounds of dirt. Rider and mare slow as they approach the barrel, leaning their bodies into the curve. Dice’s white shirt billows in the lashing wind.

Dice and Katie successfully clear the second and third barrel, placed in a triangle formation. As they head back toward the gate Rachel gives Katie’s chestnut muscles a spurt of kicks, urging the horse faster during the last stretch.

If you're sitting on mountains of beads at your house after a Gem Show spending spree, don't worry. The Beading Divas are looking for bead donations to keep their bracelets for a cause operation running.

From now until March 7, you can drop off your extra beads to one of many locations, including Silver Sea Jewlery on Fourth Avenue. Then the jewelry-making team will turn those loose beads into buyable jewlery. Then on Saturday, March 14, the Divas will be at Silver Sea to conduct a random drawing to determine which charity will get the money from the bracelet sales. Small prizes, raffles and light refreshments will be available at the event.

Since 2009, the Beading Divas have raised more than $115,000 for animal charities by selling the bracelets that they make for $20. The proceeds from bracelet sales go to a different animal charity each month, amounting to 46 different organizations in five different states getting necessary funds from the group.

For more information on the Beading Divas, you can visit the organization's blog.

For just a couple minutes, let's all suspend our cynicism here and rally together in support of a little pug puppy named Apple. Poor little Apple jumped off of a high sofa and fractured her dog elbow. She found her way to the Hug A Pug AZ Rescue and Adoption Group after her original owners had to give her up because they couldn't afford the surgery to get her fixed up.

"She is in pain and we want to get the surgery as soon as possible," Peggy Gal of Hug A Pug AZ said. "In addition to the surgery on her elbow she needs to be spayed and microchipped before she has a chance at adoption and a full, pain free life."

The rescue group has taken to a crowdfunding campaign to raise $2,000 for Apple's puppy surgery. You might be thinking, "Why should I care about this tiny baby dog with a broken elbow?" Well, here's some reasons:

1) Have you looked at that dog's smushed up little face? Come on.
2) It's Friday, which means it's payday and you probably already paid rent last week. You know you have a few bucks to spare.
3) If my dog got hurt, I'd hope people would help and if your dog got hurt, I definitely would help. That's what people do in a community: they help each other—especially when the one that needs help is a helpless puppy named Apple with a broken leg. Without upholding these basic tenets of community and human decency, we'd all be living in anarchy.

Cough up $10 or so for this dog via Fundly and be a better person for it.

In an effort to find permanent housing for approximately 200 pets this weekend, Pima Animal Care Center is offering free adoptions this weekend. According to the Pima Animal Care Center website, adoption fees can be anywhere from $30 to $100, so saving your new pet this weekend could save you some money too.

The event is being put on by the county after they received a $4,000 grant from PetSmart. Adoptable dogs and cats come vaccinates, spayed/neutered, and microchipped. You can view some of the pets that are up for adoption by visiting the PACC website.

Otherwise, you can head to the following locations at the following times to find your furry new friend. We won't even judge you if you decide to get a cat.

PACC Shelter at 4000 N. Silverbell Road
Friday, Jan. 2: 12 p.m. - 7 p.m.
Saturday, Jan, 3 and Sunday, Jan. 4: 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

PetSmart at 4374 N. Oracle Road
Saturday, Jan, 3 and Sunday, Jan. 4: 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.

A standard $15 pet licensing applies to all adult dogs as per the county.
