Reid Park Zoo
Bella the jaguar
There’s a new furry face at the Reid Park Zoo, one with an intense stare and a caramel-tan coat featuring black rosettes.
Bella, a 10-year-old jaguar from the Akron Zoo in Ohio, recently took up residence in Tucson.
“Bella is a curious cat and has investigated everything in her surroundings. She has become comfortable quickly, resting on her back and rolling around playfully, as cats big and small do,” said Sue Tygielski, director of zoo operations, in a statement.
Bella was born in Ohio and was selected by the Association of Zoos and Aquarium’s Species Survival Plan to move to Tucson.
Like many people who move to Arizona from out-of-state, allergies were a factor in this jaguar's move, according to the zoo. Bella has skin allergies, and the hope is that Tucson’s climate will be more comfortable for her. Bella will also serve as an ambassador for her species, raising awareness about the challenges that jaguars are facing in the wild.
Guests can look for Bella in the Zoo's South America loop during visits to the Zoo. As Bella adjusts to her new home, she may spend time between her habitat and behind-the-scenes in her night house.
Bella replaces Simone, a 23-year-old jaguar who passed away in July. Simone was the oldest jaguar at an AZA-accredited zoo, and lived nearly all of her life at Reid Park Zoo. She arrived in Tucson from another zoo when she was just 7 months old. Median life expectancy for jaguars is 18.
Simone was euthanized Friday, July 5 due to age-related health issues. Simone’s sister Nikita passed away in 2017, also due to age-related health concerns.

Fans of exercise and man’s best friend are in luck, as the Humane Society of Southern Arizona is once again taking to the concrete jungle around Kino North Sports Complex in mid-November.
The society is hosting its fifth annual SWEAT for Pets: Walk, Run & Roll event, with a non-competitive 5K walk/run, raising money for homeless pets in Tucson.
The event, which is HSSA’s top-grossing fundraiser, can be tackled by teams or simply as an individual, with participants being encouraged to register early and raise money for animals.
Prizes will be given to anyone that raises $50, $100, $250, $500, $1,000 and $2,500, according to the shelter’s release, with the race costing $10 for adults to enter and free for dogs and kids.
"Last year we hosted over 750 participants and 400 dogs! All the funds raised go a long way in helping us care for the neglected, sick, injured, and homeless pets in Southern Arizona. You can make a difference while having fun at this year’s SWEAT for Pets,” said Dianna Cannon, Chief Development Officer.
For more information or to register/start a fundraising team, go to hussaz.org/SWEAT, or email the shelter at
[email protected].

Kaito the cat
“Hi friends! My name is Kaito and I am a 5-month-old boy! I am a playful kitten who loves to run and chase toy feathers. I have Feline Herpes that has caused some scarring to my right eye. I am not currently on medication but my new family will need to be familiar with the symptoms and seek veterinary care if they arise. This shouldn’t prevent anyone from adopting me though! I can still live a long, happy life!” Kaito (875058) Would you like to learn more about Kaito? Give an adoptions counselor a call at 520-327-6088, ext. 173 or visit at HSSA Main Campus at 635 W. Roger Rd.

"Hi friends! I'm Lulu. I'm a friendly 4-year-old girl who loves people! When getting attention I will
quickly roll on my back so that you can scratch my belly. I love treats and know sit, but you'll have to be quick to see it before I am on the move again." Lulu (878134)
In the past Lulu has done well with male dogs who are similar in size. She is a little clumsy, and a lot of goofy, which will best be matched with older kids. Learn more about Lulu by visiting her at The Humane Society of Southern Arizona's Main Campus at 635 W. Roger Rd. Have questions? Give an adoptions counselor a call at 520-327-6088, ext. 173.

Need a vaccine and microchip for your pet? Head down to the Donna Liggins Center this Saturday for a free clinic from Pima Animal Care Center.
The clinic starts at 8 a.m. and continues until 300 pets have been served. The service is a partnership between PACC and the City of Tucson, Ward 3.
“The community wants these types of events,” said director of animal services Kristen Hassen-Auerbach, in a release. “We’ve seen huge turnouts at every vaccine and microchip clinic we have put together. Pet owners will often line up hours before they start.”
According to PACC, animals can receive free rabies vaccines, DHPP/FRCP vaccines, microchips, flea/tick medicine and de-wormer. A licensed veterinarian will administer the vaccines.
There is no set limit on the number of pets a single family can bring. Dogs should be on leashes and cats need to be in carriers marked with the owner's name, cat name, and owner phone number.
“I’m excited to partner with PACC and the staff at the Donna Liggins Center to bring this free clinic to Ward 3,” said council member Paul Durham, in a statement. “For the health of your pet and our community, I hope you’ll stop by and take advantage of the services PACC has put together.”
The Donna Liggins Center is located at 2160 N. Sixth St. in Tucson.

To learn more about Roy give an adoptions counselor a call at 520-327-6088, ext. 173 or visit him at HSSA Main Campus at 635 W. Roger Rd.

A dozen chickens have found their way from a Pima County home to the fine folks at Pima Animal Care Center, resulting in a rare “5 Bucks a Cluck” sale.
The chicks were surrendered to the center on Tuesday night, with a total of 60 chickens of all ages ending up at the shelter, with close to 10 of the 60 available to be adopted immediately.
“It’s not often where we have so many chickens available to adopt,” said Director of Animal Services, Kristen Hassen-Auerbach. “We get some in from time to time, but not this many at once. Our shelter is already stretched pretty thin taking care of the hundreds of pets that have come in over the last couple weeks. If people truly want to help the shelter adopt a chicken, dog or cat.”
Anyone interested in adopting the chickens can contact Michele Figueroa, at
[email protected], with the birds going on a first come, first serve basis.
People can adopt up to five chickens at a time and should bring their own carriers, the release said.
For more information on the chickens and any of the center’s 118 pets up for adoption, visit www.webcms.pima.gov/cms/one.aspx?objectId=18469.
