Watch Magnus Carlsen, No. 1 ranked chess player in the world, subdue the world's second richest man in a friendly game of chess. The match only lasted one minute and 19 seconds. It just goes to show you that even billionaire geniuses like Bill Gates don't win at everything.

Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman became the Stone Cold Steve Austin of football after the win against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.
Sherman deflected a pass to Niner wide receiver Michael Crabtree that resulted to a game winning interception. I saw it at Che's Lounge with a bunch of instant Seahawk fans, alright, not everyone, but I was one of them. They turned off the game and put on some live Nirvana show I have never seen before, so I missed the brilliant post-game interviews with one of the League of Boom members.
I love watching shit talkers make fools of themselves on national television. Instead of talking about what happen on the field with Fox Sport's Erin Andrews, Sherman decided to bash Crabtree and the sorry attempt to get past him and the best defense in the NFL. I found it enjoyable, but did he go to far? Sherman repeated himself with ESPN and called the ending to this before the game even started.
Sherman's anger was better explained on MMQB:
But that’s not why I don’t like the man. It goes back to something he said to me this offseason in Arizona, but you’d have to ask him about that. A lot of what I said to Andrews was adrenaline talking, and some of that was Crabtree. I just don’t like him.I ran over to Crabtree to shake his hand but he ignored me. I patted him, stuck out my hand and said, “Good game, good game.” That’s when he shoved my face, and that’s when I went off.
I threw a choking sign at 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Why? Because he decided he was going to try the guy he was avoiding all game, because, I don’t know, he’s probably not paying attention for the game-winning play. C’mon, you’re better than that.
Hopefully, Sherman will repeat this magic at the Super Bowl against Peyton Manning and all the other Denver Bronco squad members.

I'm not super-invested in the whole Arizona vs. Arizona State (aka Girls Gone Wild University and Casino) thing — after all I graduated from Oregon State, one of the top two universities in the state of Oregon — and of course, anything created to hype a giant fundraising project is going to indulge in a bit of overdramatics, but the language in the above video, showing off renderings of the forthcoming renovation of Sun Devil Stadium, is truly spectacular. It takes "bravery" to have the vision to take a ton of money and fix up an outdated home for an occasionally successful football program, complete with giant screens and escalators?
"We are not the first Sun Devils. And we won't be the last. Our inheritance is here; a gift to our generation." Where can I hand over my life savings, Michael Crow? I want my lasting contribution to society to be a slab of concrete that will be outdated a few years after its built. Tough break, cancer research projects!
Sigh.

Seven of my late summer and fall 2014 weekends just got filled up. If you're a Wildcat fan, the same goes for you.
The University of Arizona announced its 2014 football schedule this afternoon, along with the entirety of the Pac-12 Conference. And while the slate doesn't feature many surprises—since the Pac-12 notes ahead of time which league foes each team will play at home and away each season—it does once again feature a strangely long stretch without a game at Arizona Stadium.
The Wildcats open play Aug. 30 at home against UNLV, then after a Sept. 6 trip to UTSA (that's the University of Texas at San Antonio for you laypeople) they're back home Sept. 13 to host Nevada.
The Pac-12 schedule starts up a week later with Arizona hosting California on Sept. 20, marking the return of former UA assistant and current Cal head coach Sonny Dykes.
Arizona's other home games are Oct. 11 against USC (which will serve as the Family Weekend game), Nov. 8 against Colorado (which will be the Homecoming tilt), Nov. 15 against Washington and Nov. 28 (a Friday) against Arizona State.
Here's the full schedule, in handy-dandy, cut-out-and-put-on-your-fridge-if-you've-got-a-printer-attached-to-your-computer format (after the break):

The Arizona Diamondbacks may have gone off to the Salt River Fields at Talking Stick (a bigger, better stadium complex) near Scottsdale, but they haven't forgot about their fans in the Old Pueblo.
The 2014 Spring Training tickets go on sale to the general public on Saturday, Jan. 11, but Tucson D-Back fans are eligible for a 50% discount on all 2014 spring training games by using the promo code PIMA50. This sweet deal STARTS on Friday, Jan. 10, but ends at midnight. The discount only works in conjunction with a Pima County zip code, and up to 8 tickets per discount.
D-Backs spring training tickets sold out all 12 games at Salt River Fields last year, according to the press release. The opening game will be Feb. 26 versus the 2013 National League West Champions, Los Angeles Dodgers.

Arizona's women's basketball team is 4-7 heading into tonight's Pac-12 Conference opener at Washington. It's been a rough season to this point for the Wildcats, and it sounds like it's going to get even rougher.
Deadspin is reporting on a lawsuit filed in Texas that alleges current UA assistant Sean LeBeauf, who is in his first season with the team, sexually harrassed a player at his previous job at Paris (Tex.) Junior College.
The top-ranked Arizona men's basketball team begins Pac-12 Conference play tonight when it hosts Washington State at 8 p.m. on the Pac-12 Network, a.k.a. the channel not good enough for DirecTV.
While the first chance to watch the 13-0 Wildcats in action in nearly two weeks is a good reason to tune in, the team isn't likely to be the main draw.
What is, you ask? Why, none other than the McKale Center's fancy schmancy new four-sided overhead video board, which the school has been installing above the court since Arizona's last game on Dec. 23.

— Arizona Basketball (@APlayersProgram) December 29, 2013Why yes, it does look big enough to crush the entire Wildcats and Cougars rosters during pre-game warmups.
The new, mammoth contraption is part of a multi-phase overhaul of McKale, which all told will cost $80 million and will include new seats, better concessions and bathrooms and lots of other bells and whistles.

Sad news out of the Phoenix area, as an obituary that ran in today's Arizona Republic shows former Arizona gymnastics champion Heidi Hornbeek passed away over the weekend at age 36.
Hornbeek was a six-time All-American for the Wildcats between 1996 and 2000, winning the NCAA title in the floor exercise as a freshman. She won the AAI American Award in 2000 as the nation's top senior gymnast, then went on to a successful career as a surgeon.
Hornbeek was inducted into the University of Arizona Sports Hall of Fame in 2005, and in 2007 her leotard was retired and hung in the rafters at McKale Center.
Her memorial service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday at St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church in Phoenix.

Here's a video of the Arizona Wildcats performing Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. The number one men's college basketball team knows how to hit the backboard, but they can't hit a note to save their lives. It's heart-warming and really hard to watch at the same time. Enjoy!

Today marks the official opening of Casino del Sol's golf complex, known as the Sewailo Golf Club, a long-in-the-works project that's slowly converted several acres of open desert south of the casino into a 7,400-yard course.
It's now also the home of the University of Arizona's golf teams, the school announced this morning.
The Wildcats' men's and women's teams will use Sewailo for its practices (including a private driving range, according to a press release) as any hosted competitions between now and June 30, 2015. Sewailo replaces Arizona National — formerly The Raven — on Tucson's northeast side, which had served as the UA home course for more than a decade.
According to the Arizona athletic department Web site, the UA men's team hosts two regular-season tournaments in 2014, starting with a two-day event Jan. 27-28.
