University of Arizona basketball's current favorite son, Derrick Williams, is bringing his Minnesota Timberwolves teammates down to Tucson with him today to hang out (and sign autographs) at his new streetwear shop, VII Grand, 178 E. Broadway Blvd., prior to their game with the Phoenix Suns tomorrow night.

Head down there, check it out, and grab yourself a fancy-as-hell-looking snakeskin-and-leather strapback cap.

Famed photographer Eric Kroll, who suggested we go on a photo safari to the Tucson Rodeo yesterday, captured a set of portraits and candids while I snapped action shots. He shared a few with TW. More photos after the jump and more from Kroll at his blog.

Last year's attempt at closing down the streets of Tucson, Cyclovia Tucson, was marred by March showers (something I feel partially responsible for, after jokingly suggesting the possibility of rain with Coley Ward, organizer of the then-concurrent event, Solar Rock during an interview). To counter that, and to double-down on bicycling fun, Living Streets Alliance is planning on holding two Cyclovia events this year, this time in April.

From the Cyclovia Tucson Kickstarter page:

Why?

Because in Tucson almost 30% of our community footprint consists of roads and parking lots. With so much space set aside for the automobile every day, we don't think it's too much to ask to take back some of that space a couple times a year and populate it with people who can exercise and breathe clean air.

...

Cyclovia Tucson also shows that healthy, active transportation choices like biking and walking are fun ways to weave more activity into our daily lives. Cyclovia routes are designed with popular destinations in mind like schools, parks, businesses, and restaurants.

But the real fun is in slowing down and discovering all the hidden treasures in our neighborhoods that we zoom right past in our cars every day. Cyclovia Tucson organizers are working with local designers and artists to create passports and hand-carved rubber stamps that are hidden in plain site along the routes. Inspired by the popular pastime known as Letterboxing, this special Cyclovia Scavenger Hunt encourages all of us to slow down and be very observant of our surroundings.

I'm not much of a bicyclist myself, possessing grace similar to that of a drunken toddler when I'm on my bike, but Cyclovia is a great event — and the swag they're giving away to backers looks pretty great. Give them a look over at their Kickstarter page, and for more info, check out the Cyclovia Tucson Facebook.

Somehow, we have survived the #TucsonBlizzard, so now we have to rebuild, trying to figure out what to do with our lives without the threat of a snow-based demise hanging over our heads. The good news is that there's still soccer to be watched and enjoyed tonight, as the Desert Diamond Cup rolls on with Real Salt Lake playing New England at 5 pm and Seattle taking on New York at 7.

The amusing press release from the FC Tucson folk on the subject is below the cut:

Honestly, I'm not sure I need to even write anything after that headline, because it already demonstrates how hardcore this woman is. Still...

Swedish LPGA rookie Daniela Holmqvist was playing through the qualifying round of the Australian Open earlier this week when she felt a sharp sting around her ankle—which turned out to be a black widow spider.

From Golf Digest:

After quickly swatting it away, she doubled over in pain.

"When I told the local caddies in my group what had happened, they got very upset and said it was a Black Widow, and immediately started looking for their phones to call the medics," Holmqvist told Karin Klarstrom of Svensk Golf.

As Holmqvist's leg started to swell and the pain became intense, she made the quick decision to take matters into her own hands (she'd just been informed that a Black Widow bite can kill a child in as little as 30 minutes). She pulled a tee out of her pocket ("it was the only thing I had handy," she told Svensk Golf) and used it to cut open the wound so she could squeeze out the venom and keep it from spreading inside her body.

"A clear fluid came out," she said. "It wasn't the prettiest thing I've ever done, but I had to get as much of it out of me as possible."

She then finished the 14 remaining holes in the round (supervised by medics the whole time), despite the pain and discomfort she was feeling. Unfortunately, she missed the cut to qualify for the tournament, which is a shame—but at least the whole world knows that Daniela Holmqvist ain't got time for spiders.

The International Olympic Committee has decided to eliminate wrestling, a sport as old as the Olympic Games (if not older!) from the 2020 Games, and beyond.

From Sporting News:

The IOC board acted after reviewing the 26 sports on the current Olympic program. Eliminating one sport allows the International Olympic Committee to add a new sport to the program later this year.

Wrestling, which combines freestyle and Greco-Roman events, goes back to the inaugural modern Olympics in Athens in 1896.

"This is a process of renewing and renovating the program for the Olympics," IOC spokesman Mark Adams said. "In the view of the executive board, this was the best program for the Olympic Games in 2020. It's not a case of what's wrong with wrestling, it is what's right with the 25 core sports."

Adams said the decision was made by secret ballot over several rounds, with members voting each time on which sport should not be included in the core group. IOC President Jacques Rogge did not vote.

Wrestling was voted out from a final group that also included modern pentathlon, taekwondo and field hockey, officials familiar with the vote told The Associated Press. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the voting details were not made public.

...

Wrestling will now join seven other sports in applying for inclusion in 2020. The others are a combined bid from baseball and softball, karate, squash, roller sports, sport climbing, wakeboarding and wushu. They will be vying for a single opening in 2020.

Honestly, what's surprising to me is that field hockey was even an Olympic sport.

Fare thee well, Olympic wrestling, and best of luck to you in the future. Play them out on their "One Dream," Sarah McLachlan.
