WE HAVE A WINNER! Thanks for participating, both of you.
I have four tickets to the Diamondbacks game tonight to give away to a lucky Range reader.
Two problems:
1. The game is tonight, so you'd need to pick up the tickets from our offices today, then drive up to haboob country for the 6:40 first pitch.
2. The game is against the Mariners, who are terrible.
The upside: they're great seats and they're free. So, if you're sure you can actually go up to Phoenix tonight (really, really sure, because I'd hate to give the tickets to someone who can't use them and have someone else miss out). Since we never seem to give out anything on Twitter, send us a tweet (@tucsonweekly) with some sort of text that includes the words "I promise to pick up the tickets today and will actually go to the game" and they're yours. First come, first served, pending verification that you're not a liar.

After seeing a few tweets about Tiger Woods today, I decided to flip over to Yahoo to see who was atop the leaderboard for the U.S. Open golf tournament in San Francisco.
Then I had a major flashback to my days covering prep sports in this town.
Former Rincon/University High School standout Michael Thompson shot a 4-under 66 during the first round Thursday at the Olympic Club, giving him (for now) a three-shot lead over the rest of the field. Including Tiger, who is at 1-under 69.
Thompson, whom I recall having many wonderful and intelligent conversations with — not a common situation when covering high school sports — graduated from Rincon about 10 years ago, and went on to be a stud at the University of Alabama as well.
Since turning pro in 2008 he's amassed a cool $1.5 million in earnings.

In the Chronicle of Higher Education, there was a feature story written by Brad Wolverton that gave insight to the life of a college athlete. Although he falls under the stereotype of a “dumb jock” with a surprisingly low GPA and never having a desire to do well in school, I learned that not every story has that stereotypical plotline.
You know the type I’m talking about: football player who didn’t care to do his homework or read the books because he was busy dedicating his time to becoming an athletic scholar at some university only to repeat the same cycle in high school.
Although on a side note, the NCAA is trying to change the academic expectations for athletes by requiring incoming college freshmen to have a 2.3 grade point average opposed to a 2.0, so athletes are anticipated to start caring more about their studies and become more well-rounded young men.

The Tucson Padres return to Tucson tonight to launch a four-game series against the Reno Aces. It's also Thirsty Thursday, which means you can get yourself a 16-oz. beer—or soft drinks—for just $1.50.
And if you like mixing adult beverages with baseball, tomorrow night's Kino Krawl is for you: $15 gets you a ticket to the ballgame and eight drinks! On Saturday, the Zooperstars are coming for a visit and you'll enjoy a post-game fireworks show. And on Sunday, you can bring your dog to the ballpark.
Details on all the promotions, ticket sales and the rest can be found here.
ETA: As sharp-eyed reader Red Star notes, the Kino Krawl promotion has been revised. From the Padres' Facebook page:
We apologize about the confusion but our Friday promotion has changed. Pima County informed us that they would not allow the Kino Krawl as it was offered so we came up with another great deal. It's a $2 drink special on 16 oz. beer (Miller, Coors and Bud), 16 oz. soft drinks and water; $3 for mixed drinks (normally $6.50), wine, kraft beers (normally $5.50) and margaritas when the gates open at 6:00. The alcohol special ends at 9:00. College students and military get in for $5 with an ID. If you already bought tickets, we'll be sending you an e-mail to explain our conversion later today. Game time is 7:05

I couldn't possibly describe what Patrick Hruby pulls off with his extensive piece on The Post Game today, "The Truth Is Out There," but if you're a fan of sports or conspiracy theories or David Foster Wallace-styled annotations, you'll have to check out how he weaves together Michael Phelps' millisecond win in Bejing, several Super Bowls, international soccer, and the 1985 NBA Draft Lottery that brought Patrick Ewing to New York:
I believe in the fix. I believe in the hidden hand, that sports have a secret, redacted history. I believe that Game 6 of the 2002 NBA Western Conference Finals was a sham, that Spygate was a cover-up of a cover-up, that Super Bowl III was preordained, that Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s heartwarming 2001 victory at Daytona was, in fact, too good to be true, that Michael Jordan's first baseball-playing retirement was anything but, that powerful forces don't want me to write this because powerful forces don't want you to read this. I believe that black is white, white is black, the 1990 World Cup draw was rigged and Sophia Loren was definitely in on the con. Most of all, I believe that on June 18, 1985, inside the Starlight Room of the Waldorf-Astoria hotel in New York City, in front of Pat O'Brien and nearly 150 reporters and umpteen popping flashbulbs and an entire world utterly oblivious to the conspiracy about to take place before them in plain sight, David Joel Stern did not act alone.Of course, I might be crazy.

The Tucson Padres managed a late-game comeback to win, 11-10, against the Las Vegas 51s yesterday. The homestand continues tonight with a 7 p.m. game and $1 hot dogs. Tomorrow is Thirsty Thursday, co-sponsored your friends at the Tucson Weekly. You can find details on tickets and promotions here.
Here are details from last night's game, courtesy of the Padres' Tim Hagerty:
The Tucson Padres trailed by six runs in the sixth inning Tuesday and came back to beat the Las Vegas 51s, 11-10. The Padres sent 10 batters to the plate in the bottom of the sixth and scored six times, one shy of a season high for runs in an inning. Matt Clark and Yasmani Grandal hit back-to-back home runs in the rally, which also saw an RBI single by Jedd Gyorko and a sacrifice fly from Blake Tekotte. With the score tied in the bottom of the eighth, Gyorko blasted a high solo home run to left field to put the Padres ahead.

The University of Arizona is looking to make the head coaching position for its club hockey team a permanent position, not just something that apparently anybody can do. The gig was posted today on the UA job board and requires, among other things, applicants to have a degree in recreation, sports management, administration, physical education or a related field and have at least four of head coaching experience at the college level or better.
Karen White, a UA Campus Recreation employee who is listed as the departmental contact on the job listing, said the school is looking to solidify the position by making it a 10-month appointment that pays $35,000. Current head coach Sean Hogan, who piloted the Wildcats this past season during their first year as an official UA sport, is allowed to reapply for the opening, White said.
I wonder if Leo Golembiewski, who founded the team — known then as the Icecats — and coached it for 32 years before being ousted by his players a year ago when they wanted to get under the umbrella of Campus Rec, will apply for the position ...
