Tiger Woods made it official on Tuesday when he announced on his personal website that he would be playing next week in the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club in Marana's Dove Mountain enclave.
Woods' presence at the event will likely mean local TV stations and daily newspapers will have to double their staff coverage in order to keep track of every move the world's most famous sex-addicted golfer makes. Whether that includes any forays into the seedier parts of Tucson is unclear.
Woods has played in four of the previous five Match Play events held in Marana, winning it all in 2008. Since then, though, he's one only one of three matches, and missed the 2010 event while, um, marital issues.
No word on whether any of the local gentlemen's clubs will be offering any Tiger-themed specials next week, but considering we'll have both a cadre of pro golfers (and their band of affluent fans) and the rodeo participants in town, it's bound to be a business week for Tucson's sin trade.

So, Arizona has apparently made a splash by getting a verbal commitment from the son of one of the greatest baseball players of all time.
To play football.
Trey Griffey, son of baseball great Ken Griffey, Jr. — and, yes, grandson of Ken Griffey Sr. — is a standout wide receiver from Florida, and plans to be part of new UA football Rich Rodriguez's first recruiting class.
The Griffeys join a growing list of 'celebrity' families whose offspring have selected Tucson for their ... continuing education. That distinguished list includes, but is not limited to, the children of:
David Hasselhoff
Reba McEntire
Lionel Richie
Charles Barkley
Robert Kardashian
Mind you, that list includes two kids known far more for their non-intercollegiate efforts (ahem, Nicole Richie and Kourtney Kardashian) than anything related to academics.
Nevertheless, the UA's acquisition of a Griffey should be considered a PR coup. Here's hoping he inherited dad's propensity for making diving catches.

However, it will be during an advertisement for Skechers, and the part of town that makes it on camera? Tucson Greyhound Park, and animal rights activists aren't happy:
In the spot, the tiny dog — bedecked in Skechers new GOrun shoes — races a pack of greyhounds. But that, too, is raising eyebrows from an animal rights group Grey2K USA, which is petitioning to ax the ad. It claims that the greyhounds were mistreated and kept in tiny cages at Tucson Greyhound Park."Skechers using Tucson Greyhound Park as the backdrop for an ad is akin to Hertz calling back O.J. Simpson as a spokesperson," says Christine Dorchak, president of Grey2K.
But Tom Taylor, CEO of the track, says the cages are among the largest in the country. "Animal activists would like the cages to be 12 feet by 12 feet, with couches and TVs."
The American Humane Society says no animals were harmed in the making of the ad. Armato says Grey2K's complaints are unrelated to the purpose of the ad. The spot does not glamorize dog racing, he says. "It is simply a metaphor for a remarkable, underdog achievement."

This is really confusing, mostly because I thought John Parr was British, and probably isn't terribly invested in American football, but I suppose this was a better choice from the canon of 80's film themes than "Tebow's Theme (The Best Than You Can Do)" or "Tebow My Breath Away".

Christine Farrugia is a retired government worker, but she isn't taking it easy just yet. She's on a mission to teach and raise money for children by biking around the world. She started off in California and will be in Tucson through early next week. At noon on Monday, Jan. 2, she will be at Fairwheel Bikes, 1110 E. Sixth St. to talk about her journey. Future stops include Houston, New Orleans, Orlando and Miami as well as Cape Town, South Africa and Harare, Zimbabwe. Visit www.projectmiracleco.org for details.
Read on for more info:
Christine Farrugia is currently riding her bike, alone, around the world. Beginning early December with an event that included the Mayor of Pasenda and many others seeing her off. The 56 year old retired government worker with over 20 years of teaching is peddling her way to a year-long bicycle ride around the world to raise awareness and money for Children’s issues.
Ms. Farrugia had an epiphany recently, a seed of an idea that came from one of her students. An avid traveler and sometime bicyclist (to school and back), a student asked "if she had ever ridden her bicycle around the world"? It was at that moment that she realized that she had an opportunity to make her classroom much larger than just the standard four walls. With over 20 years experience teaching she will embark on a bicycle ride around the world. Christine has begun the year long trek that will take her from California to major cities and small towns across the US to Asia, Europe, South America and everywhere in-between.As Christine sees it, it's more than just a bike trip around the world-"I will be teaching via Youtube videos. I am working with a teacher at Hillsides who will show the video once a month with Q & A with the kids, the teacher will email me the questions and I answer the questions on the next video. My goal is to do this in every school in the world."For Christine Farrugia, this is a chance to teach children the world over about the importance of exercise, determination and that anyone (even an ordinary person) can accomplish anything if they put their mind to it. She has also established the Project Miracle Co, (organized solely to raise funds for established children's charities) that will be the direct beneficiary of the media attention her bike ride will generate.
