Michael Chihak of Arizona Public Media's Arizona Week got a lengthy interview with astronaut Mark Kelly, the husband of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.
Chihak reports:
U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords is speaking in full sentences now, says her husband, an improvement from a month ago when she uttered several phrases in a national television interview.Retired Navy Capt. Mark Kelly told Arizona Week in an interview at his suburban Houston home Thursday that the Democratic congresswoman from Tucson is still working to combine the sentences she is able to speak.
Asked if she is forming complete sentences, Kelly said, "Oh, yeah, absolutely. The hard part for her right now is stringing them together. But that's coming."

My favorite reality show cliched quote is still "I'm not here to make friends", but this tribute to another overused phrase makes me wonder if there's some school for non-famous TV personalities out there teaching this stuff. I'd at least like to see the textbook for "Drink Throwing 101".

KOLD, owned by Raycom, has decided to go with in-house anchor talent for its produced newscasts for KMSB. Only Gina Trunzo, who handled weather for KMSB's Belo-produced 9 pm newscast, has a position in the new arrangement, according to a KOLD press release.
Trunzo will join Mark Stine and Erin Jordan on FOX 11 Daybreak, which will air from 7-9 am weekdays on KMSB. The scheduled launch date is Feb. 1. Stine also replaces Scott Kilbury on KOLD News 13 This Morning, which airs from 4:30 to 7 am. As a result Kilbury is transferring to the KMSB 9 pm news anchor desk. Aaron Pickering will handle weather responsibilities alongside Kilbury at 9.
KOLD continues to search for reporter, photographer and behind-the-scenes positions, according to news director Michelle Germano in the press release, but the on-air talent announcement does not bode well for long-time KMSB anchor Lou Raguse or sportscasters David Kelly and Kevin Lewis.
Raycom and Belo entered into a shared service arrangement last month. Under the deal, Belo, which owns KMSB and KTTU, will pay Raycom to produce news broadcasts from KOLD's studio facilities near Cortaro and I-10. The move is leading to the dissolution of more than 30 positions at KMSB.

Since Mr. Khloe Kardashian was traded to a different NBA team the other day, I think that means another city will be subjected to the Kardashians. This is terrible, terrible news, but fortunately it's only Dallas.

Travel website KAYAK provided a shockingly up-front reason on their blog for why they won't be advertising on TLC's "All American Muslim". It wasn't because of the pressure from insane Christian zealots, but because they just don't like the show:
When we decided to give our money to TLC for this program, we deemed the show a worthy topic. When we received angry emails regarding our decision to advertise, I looked into the show more thoroughly. The first thing I discovered was that TLC was not upfront with us about the nature of this show. As I said, it's a worthy topic, but any reasonable person would know that this topic is a particular lightning rod. We believe TLC went out of their way to pick a fight on this, and they didn't let us know their intentions. That's not a business practice that generally gets repeat business from us. I also believe that it did this subject a grave disservice. Sadly, TLC is now enjoying the attention from this controversy.
[...]
Lastly, I watched the first two episodes. Mostly, I just thought the show sucked.
Based on our dealings with TLC and the simple assessment of the show, I decided we should put our money elsewhere. Apologies again.

This ad is more unsettling than sexy for me, but I'm also not the sort of person looking to buy a truck, so maybe they've got their target demographic locked down.

I confess to being a nature porn junkie, especially when it comes to those extraordinary BBC series Planet Earth, The Blue Planet and the upcoming Frozen Planet, so I was utterly captivated by this tribute to Sir David Attenborough.

The latest edition of Arizona Illustrated's Political Roundtable, featuring a look at how Newt is beating Mitt among Arizona Republicans, an examination of the legal fights over healthcare in the state and partisan elections in Tucson, and a talk with new Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild. Republican strategist Jonathan Paton and former Pima County Democratic Party chairman Paul Eckerstrom talk about the issue with Arizona Public Media's Andrea Kelly and moderator Jim Nintzel.

The minute I saw that Katy Perry would be hosting Saturday Night Live with Robyn as the musical guest, I could already feel the angst filling in my soul. I love Swedish popstar Robyn, but I despise Katy Perry. I didn't like her Christian pop record when I cared about such things, I don't understand how someone who wrote the song "UR So Gay" turned into some pseudo-champion of self-esteem for "Firework" and I can't stand her weird attempt to be adorable and sexy at the same time because I think it makes her seem like she's suffered a brain injury.
So, I was already cringing that I would be forced to DVR the entire ninety minutes of SNL just to catch two performances by Robyn, but the promos for this week's episode make me want to just wait and see the musical performances on Hulu later or something. How could you ruin Robyn for me by putting seemingly the least funny celebrity on earth on your show, Lorne Michaels? How could you?

Earlier this week, Dan Gibson posted about Experian Simmons' most recent poll examining political ideology and TV watching habits. A similar poll was released last year.
This whole thing is fascinating to me, because as much as anything else, the entertainment we consume speak to our vast ideological divides. The most interesting question, to me, is a chicken and egg proposition: does art alter our perspective, or are we drawn to art that reflects our personality and world view?
