Dan Gibsons terrible screencap from the 4 pm broadcast on KOLD.
  • Dan Gibson's terrible screencap from the 4 pm broadcast on KOLD.

He's been off the air since a strange incident in early September, but Chuck George is back on air tonight, according to Dave Hatfield at Inside Tucson Business:

KOLD News 13 chief meteorologist Chuck George is back on the air today (Oct. 24) following a leave of absence since he was unable to finish the 10 p.m. news on Sept. 6.

He first appeared doing a promotional weather announcement about 3:30 p.m. and then appearing on the stations' 4 p.m. newscast.

"It worked out well, we actually had a change in weather today," said Debbie Bush, general manager. She declined to discuss the details of George's absence but said it was good to have him back on the air.

While it will still take quite a bit of additional goodwill to overcome the musical abomination named "Moves Like Jagger", Adam Levine of Maroon 5's profane tweet from earlier today helps a bit.

Still, I miss Kara's Flowers:

(For anyone not getting the reference in the title, here's this.)

I was watching Monday Night Football early this week (Monday, to be exact), when a promo came on for Tim Allen's new sitcom, Last Man Standing, which is pretty much Home Improvement, except with girls instead of boys. Anyway, in this promo, Tim Allen says something to the effect of "What's with fantasy football? Why not go outside and play real football? NERDS!!!"

Thanks to Parks and Recreation last night for introducing me to "Treat Yo Self Day", a celebration that will become a new Gibson family tradition once we have enough money to actually buy things.

Here's the wonderful festivity in action:

While I do generally try to avoid watching children's television at all costs, when my daughter turns on Yo Gabba Gabba!, it's a nice break from the manic randomness of Spongebob or the pure idiocy of the Wonder Pets. For some reason, DJ Lance Rock and his costumed posse showed up on Jimmy Fallon last night and fittingly for the show's embrace of hipster-parent-friendly musical acts, they brought Devo's Mark Mothersbaugh, Bootsy Collins, Biz Markie, Leslie Hall, and Erykah Badu along to encourage us all to party.

Good advice for a Tuesday, I'd say.

It was a strange night to be downtown on Saturday as Insane Clown Posse and their truckloads of Faygo terrorized the Rialto Theatre. I happened to be in the Hotel Congress lobby to see a stream of heavily intoxicated Juggalos with remnants of face-paint try to get past the club's security, with one particularly upset individual attempting to throw a potted plant at an employee. [Update: the plant thrower was just a jerk apparently, not a Juggalo.] Plus, there was this addition to a fountain at the new Centro Garage:

Solid use of type, however.

Meanwhile, on Saturday Night Live, their running gag of mocking ICP continued with this tribute to the group's YouTube based marketing campaign. It's unfortunate that Columbus Day Assblast is a fictitious event, because it sounds like a pretty good time:

After one of the biggest PR blunders since New Coke, Netflix won't be splitting their brand in two, after all:

Abandoning a break-up plan it announced last month, Netflix said Monday morning that it had decided to keep its DVD-by-mail and online streaming services together under one name and one Web site.

The company admitted that it had moved too fast when it tried to spin-off the old-fashioned DVD service into a new company called Qwikster.

“We underestimated the appeal of the single Web site and a single service,” Steve Swasey, a Netflix spokesman, said in a telephone interview. He quickly added: “We greatly underestimated it.”

Mr. Swasey said that the Netflix chief executive Reed Hastings declined an interview request. But in a statement, Mr. Hastings said, “Consumers value the simplicity Netflix has always offered and we respect that. There is a difference between moving quickly — which Netflix has done very well for years — and moving too fast, which is what we did in this case.”

Mr. Swasey declined to comment on any involvement by the Netflix board in the decision to keep the two services together. Initial reaction to the Netflix announcement was largely positive, and the company’s stock rose about 6 percent in early trading.

There's still a question of whether the whole model of mailing people DVDs is sustainable in the long term (I probably think it isn't), but the combination of some sort of physical product combined with whatever's available streaming seems to make the most sense, so splitting the two products was bound to fail. However, until the streaming version has the actual movies you're looking for, instead of a selection of films that might do instead since you're desperate and trying to entertain two children who won't sit still for five minutes unless they're constantly entertained (just as an example), splitting up the operation clearly isn't going to fly.
