The first volume of Fallon and Timberlake's novelty rap medley was quite popular, and it's always good to hear The Roots tackling just about anything, so I suppose it's no particular surprise to hear the two hamming their way through "Push It".

The surprisingly good TV series Friday Night Lights came to an end on Friday night, but that doesn't mean you can't still be inspired by Coach Taylor. When you're down and you don't think you can accomplish greatness, play this video compiling the greatest motivational hits from the series' run.

What I learned from the preview of season two of Walking Dead that aired after Breaking Bad last night:

1. That one cop that was in a coma for a while is still alive.
2. There are still zombies.

Thanks, AMC. Thanks for nothing.

I'm generally filled with jealous, hateful rage when anyone gets to go on vacation, especially during Tucson's furnace-like summers, but since Jordan Green and I are friends, I'm trying on the "be happy for other people" hat while he's in Portland, enjoying professional soccer and lots of beer. Whatever.

So, since Jordan's too busy to write a TV column this week, I'm going to just assume he was going to talk about the Lifetime show Dance Moms this week, since it's the program he's always bugging me to watch.

1. Nick Offerman wasn't nominated for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy for his brilliant portrayal of Ron Swanson. However, seemingly the entire male cast of Modern Family was. Amy Poehler correctly assessed the injustice:

But it's a hot load of bullshit that he didn't get a nomination, and you can quote me on that. But I suspect and hope that will change. And certainly that field, there's a lot of talented men vying for that position. If you asked Nick, he'd say the show is represented. But I would say his work on the show is the best stuff on TV, and he deserves every award. A lot of people don't know that Nick designed all of the costumes in "Game of Thrones."

2. Emmy statistics for the late, lamented HBO show The Wire. Two nominations, no wins, once losing to an episode of House. Statistics for the somewhat enjoyable, but nearly entirely disposable HBO show Entourage?: 25 nominations, four wins.

Last year, my buddy Curtis showed me how Netflix's streaming service worked through my Wii and I thought: Well, that's cool. You get all those movies on-demand, plus a new one in the mail, all for eight bucks a month (or whatever it was back then).

I'd avoided Netflix until then because I'd been a loyal customer of Tucson's wonderful Casa Video for about a quarter-century and, when possible, I like supporting the local brick-and-mortar guys.

But the streaming possibilities pushed me over the edge and I kind of broke up with Casa Video, even though I'd drop by once in a while to say hello.

Anyway, Netflix announced yesterday that it was splitting the mail-order DVDs from the online streaming, with a big price hike if you want to keep both services. For me, it won't be nearly as good a deal. I'm still trying to figure out if I'll keep the streaming part (I'm sure I will at least until I finish watching every episode of The Good Guys), but I'm certain that I'm dropping the mail-order service and going back to Casa Video.

I've missed the shop and I'm looking forward to browsing the racks again, especially one two-for-one Tuesdays and Wednesdays. And this time, I'm gonna be a lot better about avoiding late fees.

Sherwood Schwartz created Gilligan's Island, The Brady Bunch, and wrote the theme songs for both shows. While both programs have slipped off the syndication radar they used to solidly occupy, that's still a pretty solid life right there.

Sherwood Schwartz was 94.

Last week, we covered the impressive potential of the upcoming fall television season. That lineup is impressive, particularly for the broadcast networks. There's a sense of, if not experimentalism, then at least risk-taking. The more networks filling to follow the HBO drama model, the better. Maybe The Wire or The Sopranos can't be replicated, but we should applaud networks for giving it a shot.

But, of course, there's a whole lot of crap out there still, and this week is about the upcoming pilots you can smell a mile out...

Vinny already left the show and The Situation is apparently in and out of the season 5 (?) house in New Jersey...could this be the end of a show that no one could have possibly expected to still be on in 2011?

I can't lie: I really liked the show at first, mostly because I'll watch anything where people get drunk and do stupid things, I guess. However, the charm was mostly in how wildly unaware the cast were. They did on camera exactly what they would have been doing what they would have done any weekend on the Shore. Once they became famous and incredibly aware of that fame, it was just weird. Snooki as a brand was far less amusing than Snooki, a overly tan weirdo wearing slippers everywhere. I applaud the cast for getting as much out of their time in the spotlight as possible, but the fifteen minutes probably ran out a year ago.
