A Tale of Two Sisters

Not wanting to leave all the thrills to Japan, Korea now gets in on the nouvelle vagueness of Asian horror flicks with A Tale of Two Sisters. More lyrical and overtly pretty than its Japanese predecessors, A Tale is nonetheless every bit as scary, and, in contrast to films like Ju-On, it actually makes sense. Plus, it’s funny when it tries to be, especially when the evil stepmother simultaneously compliments and denigrates the two titular sisters. In the end, a weird twist creates about a dozen possible explanations for what has gone before. But don’t worry: You don’t need to get all thinky to enjoy the scares of Two Sisters. It’s weird and compelling even on the surface.
