Across the Universe

Director Julie Taymor sets the ’60s to the sound of the ’60s in this semi-psychedelic love story. Much of the film is a series of musical sequences, and about 60 percent of them are excellent. Unfortunately, the nonmusical sequences are pretty much filler, and the weak musical sequences don’t advance the plot. Some careful editing could have turned this into a great film; as it stands, it’s a mediocre romance with some visually stunning high points. The good parts are pretty amazing, though, so it’s probably worth seeing for fans of the Beatles and those who enjoy a little jai guru with their deva om.
