Adaptation

Wow! It’s a movie that doesn’t insult your intelligence, and then feels bad about not insulting your intelligence, so it goes ahead and insults it, but apologetically. Probably the best movie ever made about adapting a book into a movie and then trying to kill the author of the book, Adaptation may also be the first movie that was ever written by a famous screenwriter and his fictional twin brother. In short: Charlie Kaufman, writer of Being John Malkovich, must adapt Susan Orlean’s The Orchid Thief into a film. He wants to do this because Orchid Thief eschews all the basic elements of drama, and then he realizes that Orchid Thief is "exactly the kind of crap The New Yorker would print," and then he gets his fictional twin brother to help him with the script. Meanwhile, all the real people are becoming more interesting, i.e. fictional, and a screenwriting workshop by real-life screenwriting workshop instructor Robert McKee (played by real-life actor Brian Cox) becomes the locus of all possible worlds. Not a film for those who think that Jesus died on a Friday, Adaptation is nonetheless a film for those who think that freezers lie on highways.
