All the Boys Love Mandy Lane

Seven years ago, All the Boys Love Mandy Lane made a splash at the Toronto Film Festival. The Weinstein brothers bought it and sold the rights to a company that went under. The film sat around some more and, finally, the Weinsteins are releasing it. So after one of the longest distribution journeys in memory, Mandy Lane either has to be worth the wait or unworthy of ever being released, right? Beyond the backstory, the film—a typical teens-party-in-the-middle-of-nowhere-and-die-one-by-one slasher flick—is notable for the careers it launched, even without being released in the U.S. Amber Heard is the Mandy all the boys love, and filmmaker Jonathan Levine has since directed 50/50 and Warm Bodies. This one shows some promise in plenty of places but just isn’t consistent or original enough to outlast the story of how it got here in the first place.
