An Unfinished Life

The film’s title refers to the promising life of a devoted husband, son and father-to-be that was suddenly cut short by a tragic car accident. However, the thought-provoking script by Mark and Virginia Spragg allows the title to refer to so much more. Still grief-stricken by his son’s death, Einar (Robert Redford) shuffles through his miserable life on a Wyoming ranch caring for his bedridden friend (Morgan Freeman), who was mauled by a wild bear. Einar blames his daughter-in-law (Jennifer Lopez) for taking his son. So, when she is on the run from her abusive new beau and shows up unexpectedly with the granddaughter Einar never knew existed, it does nothing to ease his permanent scowl and curt remarks. Director Lasse Hallström presents a crisp drama with beautiful photography and outstanding performances that will make viewers grateful that Miramax released the film after two years on a shelf.
