An object first discovered far off has hurtled toward Earth and now eclipses the moon in the sky. That object, as strange as it may seem, is a planet just like ours—hence the title Another Earth. Everything about it is apparently the same. On the night it was discovered, high school student Rhoda Williams (Brit Marling) was responsible for a fatal car accident. Released from prison four years later, her life is eclipsed by something just as big as that alternate planet. Rhoda wants to make amends for killing the family of composer John Burroughs (William Mapother), although they make a different kind of connection instead. A small production that emphasizes those two central performances instead of any science fiction, Another Earth is a pleasant surprise. It’s a thorough character study.
