Bill Cunningham New York

This enjoyable documentary shows us the life of Bill Cunningham, now an 80-year-old photographer tooling around Manhattan on a bike and taking pictures of people on the streets. (He puts together a weekly photo essay for The New York Times called “On the Street.”) Cunningham is a fascinating character. He’s never had a relationship; he only wants to take pictures; and he only wears blue sanitation vests because they have a lot of pockets for his film. He lived in a Carnegie Hall studio for many years in a space jammed with file cabinets—and just enough room for a mattress (but no bathroom, and no kitchen). Director Richard Press conducts some interviews, but he basically just follows Cunningham around as he joyfully snaps pics of people who are of interest to him due to their fashion sense. He’s an intriguing character, and this is an intriguing movie.
