Based on actual events. An aspiring composer
must choose between her love for music and
her love for men in this emotional period
piece by acclaimed director Bruce Beresford.
During a cultural boom in Vienna near the
turn of the 20th century, a reluctant muse,
Alma Schindler (Sarah Wynter), first chooses
men over music as she endures multiple
marriages of angst and suppressed
self-expression. However, after years of
putting her dreams on hold, the repressed
musician achieves artistic and personal
freedom by performing her first musical
opus. Although potentially powerful scenes
rush across the screen, the harmonious score,
the luscious set designs and the noteworthy
performances, including Jonathan Pryce as
composer Gustav Mahler, all prevent this film
from merely blowing by.
