Captain America: The First Avenger 3D

Summer’s cavalcade of superheroes comes to an amusing if underwhelming end with this latest offering by Marvel. While it boasts a slick retro feel and does a good job of showing us what the title character is made of, the movie comes up short on the action. Chris Evans—who is no stranger to superhero films, having played the Human Torch in the shitty Fantastic Four films—steps into the role of Steve Rogers, a 90-pound weakling eager to fight for his country in World War II. Rogers eventually becomes the subject of a super-soldier experiment, and blows up to muscleman size. The film then becomes a series of action sequences that sometimes bore and blend together. Still, Evans is decent, and the overall effect is entertaining. More than any of the other Marvel films, this one stands as a major setup for next summer’s The Avengers.

Captain America: The First Avenger 3D is not showing in any theaters in the area.
