Casanova

Did all Italians speak English with a British accent during 1753 in Venice? Well, they do in Lasse Hallström’s otherwise-entertaining depiction of the titled world-class wooer of women. Heath Ledger plays the notorious lover of ladies who intentionally entangles himself in a whimsical web of mistaken identity. He does this to win the reluctant heart of a headstrong English-speaking feminist (Sienna Miller) and to mislead the papal representative (London’s Jeremy Irons) who wants lothario’s heretic neck in a noose. Oliver Platt adds comic relief as the overweight lard merchant betrothed to Casanova’s love interest. The rest of the English-speaking supporting cast sufficiently completes this likable, yet culturally inaccurate comedy.
