Well, if nothing else, Concussion has a strange/novel inciting incident: An unhappily married woman (Robin Weigert, Calamity Jane from Deadwood) takes a baseball to the head and decides to throw herself into the world of paid sex. First, Abby calls female escorts, but that isn’t sexually satisfying enough, so she becomes a call girl herself, catering to other women. There is definite symbolism in her choice of locations; Abby receives clients in a Manhattan loft she’s renovating, indicating that it’s more than high-priced real estate under renovation here. Once you get past the trigger that sets the story off, Concussion is a pretty good film. Usually, it’s the endings that doom movies, but this one needs to work on its beginning. Still, Weigert is quite good and Concussion manages to weave sex into a story without it overshadowing everything else, which is rare these days.
