Not a date movie! Crónicas starts off with a brutal lynching and then explores the topic of the rape and murder of children. John Leguizamo plays Manolo Bonilla, a reporter who’s becoming a superstar. While he tries to maximize his fame, he plays games with a possible serial killer. The ending, where Leguizamo must choose between ratings and justice, is deeply chilling, and the humid atmosphere of Central America is used to strong effect. Tense and well-executed, with a singular performance by Leguizamo, Crónicas may be the hottest thing to come out of Ecuador since Christina Aguilera’s ass.
