Ethan Hawke stars as a vampire scientist living in a world where humans have become an endangered species and are farmed for their blood. Directed by the Spierig brothers, the movie has a decent look, and some of the sequences are genuinely scary and appropriately disgusting. However, the film loses its way, and by the time it’s over, it feels like something you’ve seen before. Willem Dafoe makes a welcome appearance as a vampire turned vampire hunter, while Sam Neill is a bit tiresome as the film’s bad guy. The movie tries to create original vampire lore, but vampires have been so done to death lately that it seems like a rehash. Too bad, because I did like Hawke in the lead role, and Dafoe looks cool sporting a crossbow.
