Joseph Gordon-Levitt has been on a roll for several years, giving us great performances across a diverse list of characters. Now he steps behind the camera, writing and directing Don Jon. He also plays Jon, a porn-obsessed player who falls dangerously hard for Barbara (Scarlett Johansson). Heck, he’s even trying to give up his porn habit for her. But that proves challenging—and yes, porn really is a big part of this movie. Gordon-Levitt proves himself as a writer here; he’s obviously got an ear for characters. He has further to go as a director, though. While Don Jon isn’t poorly put together, it’s set up to be repetitive, showing Jon going through many of the same tasks week after week. So that has a limiting effect on the movie. But overall, it’s good to see him branching out and we’ll no doubt see more of that.
