Julia Roberts stars as Liz Gilbert, a whiny, shallow woman who divorces her husband (Billy Crudup) after he suggests he's going back to school. She then moves in with a hunky actor (James Franco). Things don’t work out with the actor, so she decides to travel the world, first stopping off in Italy to stuff her face, then heading to India to get all spiritual. Her journey also takes her to Bali, where the poor thing has to have a relationship with Javier Bardem. So … this is the story of a well-to-do woman who gets to travel to exotic locations because she’s “dissatisfied” with the direction of her life. Everything this movie tries to say about the soul is vapid, and the only redeeming characters are the dudes she dates.
