Eating Out

This home-grown video feature is a cross between a really bad straight-porn video, a really good gay-porn video, and every ’80s teen movie ever made. Somehow, though, it sort of works. The central plot should sound familiar: Wanting to “get with” a cute girl, college kid Caleb pretends to be gay and goes on a date with her roommate, the hot homo on campus, Marc Everhard. While this standard setup is played out in standard form, there are also some interesting twists, like the part where straight Caleb gets a gay blowjob from Marc. The ending is disappointingly clichéd, and the female characters are miscast and given some awful dialogue, but the male leads are good, and there are some pretty clever sequences. It’s sort of the film Patrick Dempsey would have starred in if the John Hughes film he was scheduled to be in had been taken over by Harvey Fierstein.
