Fanboys

I’m not sure how this movie got made, but at some point, the Weinsteins tossed a lot of money at this loser script, hired Carrie Fisher, Kevin Smith, Ray Park, Billy Dee Williams and William Shatner for cameos, and let the bad times roll. The story is set in 1998 and revolves around four high school friends who’ve drifted apart. Now, three years after graduation, they re-unite, because one of them is dying of cancer, and they want to give him the thrill of seeing Star Wars: Episode 1—The Phantom Menace before he becomes one with the force. Since the film hasn’t yet been released, they drive out to George Lucas’ Skywalker Ranch in the hopes of stealing a copy so they can have their own special boner moment watching what, they feel assured, will be the greatest movie ever made. Unfortunately, Fanboy’s characters are two-dimensional; there’s a grotesquely unmotivated romantic plot (hot girl loves nerd boy; nerd boy doesn’t notice because he has Internet girlfriend, etc.); and the weepy dramatic parts make no sense since the relationships are never developed. But if you love references to Star Wars, and you want to see Seth Rogen in something even less funny than his usual work, you shouldn’t miss Fanboys.

Fanboys is not showing in any theaters in the area.
