Incident at Loch Ness

Werner Herzog, the co-writer and star of this film, speaks of his fascination with "the difference between fact and truth." This film pushes that difference to its limit. Ostensibly a documentary about Herzog, it’s actually more like an extended episode of Candid Camera with the joke being on the audience. Ultimately, that’s its biggest flaw, as the revelation of the gag comes a bit late and sends the film a bit off-kilter. Still, Herzog is such a good actor, you’d swear this was a real documentary. Unfortunately, co-writer/director Zak Penn gives a very broad performance that gives too much away. It’s a mixed bag, but anything involving Herzog is at least worth a look.
