Kaboom

Gregg Araki, who made the very good Mysterious Skin, boots this one after a promising first half. Thomas Dekker plays Smith, a college student going through a sexual awakening that involves both men and women. At the same time, he’s having strange dreams and hallucinations about an underground society whose members wear animal masks and murder women in the night. As the story goes on, stranger elements involving witchcraft, science fiction and the apocalypse infiltrate the film until it becomes ridiculous. Too bad, because Dekker is a likable performer; so are Haley Bennett as his friend Stella, and Juno Temple as one of his casual-sex partners. This could’ve been a decent movie about college kids figuring stuff out in a wild way, but it winds up being many different kinds of stupid.
