Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain

Kevin Hart, the pint-sized comedian/actor of Soul Plane fame, tries his hand at the stand-up movie format with mixed results. I wonder why this wasn’t a cable-TV special; at a mere 75 minutes, I felt a bit cheated. After a lame, self-congratulatory prologue complete with an “Eye of the Tiger” montage, the action switches to a sold-out Madison Square Garden. For the next hour, Hart spits out jokes about his divorce, celebrity-dom, adultery, babies running across highways, taking Ecstasy, deer-zebra hybrids called “Deerbras,” snipers at Applebee’s and what happens when a bum flicks you on the lip—the best bit of the show. Some of the material works, but too much is rooted in the yawn-inducing “bitches be crazy” category. This would have been passable as an HBO special, but shelling out $10 at the multiplex for this is boneheaded.
