Lemming

A nearly perfectly executed Hitchcockian drama. Combining elements of suspense, mystery and noir films with a little bit of John Cassavettes’ Opening Night, director Dominik Moll has put together an exposition on pacing, cinematography and editing. Young couple Alain (Laurent Lucas) and Bénédicte's (the inexplicably attractive Charlotte Gainsbourg) have dinner with Alain’s boss. Sadly, the boss’s wife (Charlotte Rampling) decides to discuss her distaste for whoring and then kill herself. Meanwhile, lemmings are invading Alain and Bénédicte home … or are they? White walls, stark music and a cinematic sense that hearkens back to the masters of the art make Lemming a film that any movie buff will delight in. Also, it’s French, so it is that much better than any Portuguese, Brazilian or Spanish film, but, sadly, not as good as an Italian film. Actually, imagine that a young Antonioni had made a Hitchcock movie, and you’ll have a pretty good picture of Lemming.
