Look at Me

The French, they are, how you say? Charmant. But in Look at Me, we get to watch a bunch of them acting like tetes-de-merde. Lolita is an overweight young woman whose famous father is currently married to a pretty young waif. Compounding matters, Lolita’s boyfriend is only using her to get access to her dad, and even Lolita’s music teacher is really only interested in her as a tool to make the connection. While everyone schemes and moans and whines, nothing in the way of a plot develops, but that’s OK. This is a very effective character study, with the kind of immersive acting that makes you feel like you’re eavesdropping on people during their most unguarded moments. It’s quiet filmmaking, but surprisingly engaging.
