March of the Penguins

Emperor penguins definitely got the short end of the stick from Mother Nature as far as mating rituals are concerned, and this impressive 84-minute documentary by Luc Jacquet artfully depicts the animals’ perilous feat. Every year in Antarctica, adult male and female emperor penguins make a daunting 70-mile trek inland in order to mate. Once the female penguin has delivered the egg, she makes the same journey back to the sea for food. Meanwhile, the male penguin stays behind to protect the egg from the 125-mph winds and sub-zero temperatures before it hatches. Eventually, the female penguin returns to her mate and newborn before the three walk back to sea. Morgan Freeman narrates this beautifully photographed awesome tradition that truly proves why they are called emperor penguins.
