Mayor of the Sunset Strip

"What’s so special about hanging around celebrities?" ask the makers of Mayor of Sunset Strip, a documentary about Rodney Bingenheimer, a famous guy no one’s heard of. Rodney basically invented the hanger-on groupie lifestyle, and in Mayor, every celebrity who’s ever been to L.A. testifies on Rodney’s behalf. Weird, sad, inspiring and horrifying, Rodney’s life is hipsterism as a disease and pop-culture pastiche as the virus. All cool people should see this and face the fear that can only come from hearing a shriveled, 5-foot-3-inch, 60-year-old man say, "Sonny and Cher were kind of like my mom and my dad." Special bonus: David Bowie establishes that the mohawk looks best on people in their 50s.
