It’s missing the punch of writer-director Dana Adam Shapiro’s terrific documentary Murderball, but his feature debut, Monogamy, is a decidedly smart thriller—one that might have developed into something pretty cool if Shapiro would have had a mulligan at his disposal. It’s a relationship … thriller. Well, aren’t they all, when you get right down to it? A wedding photographer (Chris Messina) is closing in on his own trip down the aisle (with Rashida Jones) when he finds himself more and more infatuated with a mysterious exhibitionist. It’s actually pretty fertile ground for a thriller—just not this one. There are too many standard-issue plot devices as the ending approaches, and there’s not nearly enough for Rashida Jones to do.
