Director Howard Deutch apparently couldnt decide whether he wanted to pretend he was Judd Apatow, stick with his John Hughes roots (after all, he did direct Pretty in Pink) or just throw it all out the window in favor of complete implausibility. The first act offers Apatow-esque, raunchy, anti-romantic comedy material with Dane Cook as Tank, an obnoxious chauvinist hired to treat women like crap so theyll run back to their miserable ex-boyfriends. The second act switches to a Hughesian romantic flick as Kate Hudsons Alexis and Tank begin an untraditional courtship. The third act seems like an afterthought with a conclusion that is totally unbelievable.
