Jim Sturgess and Anne Hathaway star in the story of two friends’ lives over a roughly 20-year span. The twist here is that the film only shows the viewer one day each year: July 15, the anniversary of the day they met. Sometimes on this day, they are together, and sometimes they are not, but their lives still intersect in one way or another. At first, the couple’s paths take dramatically different turns, with him becoming famous and her wallowing in a dead-end job, trying to become a writer. However, both blossom in different ways and succumb to their mutual feelings. Their friendship and eventual union is both sweet and real, played to romantic perfection by Sturgess and Hathaway. Theirs is like a real love affair, making this seem like more than just a regular romance film. It’s refreshing to see characters who grow and change, something that is so rarely seen in film these days. The film does have its tragic moments, but the lessons learned are invaluable. Simply put, this is an amazing romantic film that needs to be seen.
