Planet 51

This slick animated movie looks good, but it’s extremely lacking when it comes to plot and purpose. An astronaut (voice of Dwayne Johnson) representing America lands on a distant planet. Before he can claim the planet for Earth, he discovers that he is, in fact, an alien on a planet inhabited by little green men. Because they think he will turn them into zombies (their planet, for some reason, has a 1950s vibe), the green men look to capture the astronaut for scientific experiments. A young scientist (voice of Justin Long) winds up trying to help the astronaut get back to his spaceship, and lots of chase scenes ensue. The film is poorly edited; many of the scenes go nowhere, and the movie feels a lot longer than it is. Too bad, because the premise is cute, and the animation is decent. It also features the voices of Gary Oldman as a grouchy general and Jessica Biel as the love interest.

Planet 51 is not showing in any theaters in the area.
