Only the French could make a film that
was 80 percent foreplay. Sex Is
Comedy is not really a story so much
as a tranche de la vie wherein a
director has to coax two young actors into
a sex scene. The film builds from the fully
clothed kissing sequences to the
increasingly naked finale, with lots of
teasing and breaks for existential despair
in between. Extremely well-acted, and
with a script that is intermittently hilarious,
Sex Is Comedy nonetheless drags
a bit on its way to the climax. Still, with the
wildly naturalistic performances and
some compelling cinematography by
Laurent Machuel, this latest outing from
director Catherine Breillat (Fat Girl,
Romance) really delivers in the end
pun intended!
