Soul Surfer could be better, but its heart is in the right place. The question really is: Does Soul Surfer actually need to be better, or does it make its point perfectly well as it is? With a noteworthy performance by AnnaSophia Robb as Bethany Hamilton, the young surfer who was mauled by a shark in 2003 and lost her left arm, Soul Surfer sets out to inspire kids, pure and simple. Saying that not only are you fine the way you are, but also that you can achieve great things in spite of or even because any shortcomings you may have, this film can’t be knocked for its intentions.
