Strayed

The preternaturally beautiful Emmaneulle Béart stars as a mother escaping with her two children from the Nazi advance on France. She meets up with a mysterious young man who helps her survive, and together they set up house in an abandoned country mansion. A soundtrack of wind and crickets and droolingly pretty photography of the French countryside don’t quite make up for the directionlessness of the film, and the middle third bogs down a bit. When trouble comes to the country paradise the story gets its force back, but the final bit is a bit pat. Still, a tremendously attractive film, if not a tremendously entertaining one.
