From her birth in America in 1932 until
her suicide in England in 1963, the
now-acclaimed poet Sylvia Plath led a
tumultuous life of jealousy, depression
and self-degradation. Director Christine
Jeffs successfully intertwines these
complex inner struggles in this film
adaptation of Ted Hughes
autobiographical book of poetry entitled
Birthday Letters. Gwyneth Paltrow
bravely assumes the challenging title role
of Plath, who could never measure up to
anyones expectations, especially her
own. As her personal pressures intensify,
so does her obsession with death,
repeated suicide attempts, crazed
paranoia and brutal jealousy over her
husbands successes and illustrious
affair. All of this fuels her inevitable
suicide and legendary status in American
culture. Even if youre not a fan of Plaths
work, this effective film will keep you
glued to the screen, and may even create
interest in reading one of her poems.
