If you think horror movies are too scary, too smart or too entertaining, then The Apparition may be the film for you. It’s none of those things, all rolled into one big nothing. Ostensibly a combination of the haunted-house genre and America’s cable-TV mini-obsession with ghost-hunter shows, The Apparition stars Ashley Greene from Twilight and Sebastian Stan from Gossip Girl as a young couple whose new house is overtaken by a mysterious visitor from beyond. There’s nothing interesting about the way director Todd Lincoln presents the more-turbulent moments. Admittedly, the final confrontation is OK, and the denouement—a surprisingly fertile landscape for horror movies—represents the film at its best, but its best still isn’t very good.
