The Duchess

This 18th-century British period piece easily translates to modern day and its excess of celebrity and tabloid exploits. Based on Amanda Foreman’s novel Georgiana: Duchess of Devonshire, The Duchess stars Keira Knightley as the title character, a direct ancestor of Princess Diana with admired beauty, an influential fashion sense and political determination. However, these triumphs are downplayed due to her gossip-worthy love life. Her husband by an arranged marriage (Ralph Fiennes) is furious with Georgiana for not producing a male heir. Meanwhile, both spouses are committing adultery—the duke is having an affair a live-in mistress, while the duchess is enjoying an ambitious politician. Director Saul Dibb presents a beautifully decorated and designed film that should earn awards and praise.
