David Duchovny and Demi Moore star as Steve and Kate Jones, a couple who move to an upper-class neighborhood with their two teenage kids. The family becomes the envy of their neighbors with their high-class lifestyle and plethora of expensive gadgets. However, behind closed doors, this seemingly perfect family is hiding a big secret. The movie is the definition of a near-miss: It offers an intriguing premise and decent acting, but it just can’t seem to decide what kind of movie it wants to be. It starts out as a wry, comedic look at consumerism, before eventually getting bogged down as it tries to get serious. Duchovny and Moore keep it at least somewhat interesting; this could have been a terrible bore to sit through without their chemistry and charm.
