The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

Ben Stiller stars in a film that seriously modernizes James Thurber’s classic tale. Stiller’s bigger contribution, however, is as a director. He also co-wrote the script, but it’s ultimately Stiller’s steady hand behind the camera and his keen eye for detail that jump out at you. The film is a bit empty between the signature moments he stitches together, either for himself or the girl of his dreams (Kristen Wiig). But between the comic high points and the beautiful international scenery, it’s not a complete letdown. Stiller is a solid choice for the title character, but maybe not in a film he also directs; it feels a tad self-serving. Walter Mitty doesn’t offer the big crescendo it thinks it does and never really materializes beyond a pristine-looking comedy. But at least it’s not another Fockers movie.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is not showing in any theaters in the area.
