The Secret Lives of Dentists

A prim and proper dentist (Campbell Scott) deals with the possible infidelity being committed by his restless wife (Hope Davis) through a series of hallucinations and daydreams. Both performers are phenomenal in a film that is equal parts funny and uncomfortable. Dennis Leary is on hand as one of Scott’s patients who becomes the hallucinatory representation of the dentist’s more hateful feelings, a wisecracking imaginary friend to get through the tough times. A sequence where the dentist’s family endures a five-day bout with stomach flu is remarkable. Noteworthy in that it is actually funny, it marks one of the few times Leary has been used to near full potential. Directed by Alan Rudolph, it’s a movie sure to hit home for quite a few married couples.
