The Sorcerer's Apprentice

Although the film is perfectly OK, the souped-up retelling of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice is missing one key attribute that makes the 70-year-old cartoon so memorable: the magic. The original, with Mickey Mouse coaxing cleaning supplies to do his chores and getting in over his head, was surrounded by Fantasia and all that wonderful innovation and those beautiful compositions. Here, we get nervous Jay Baruchel surrounded by Nicolas Cage, Alfred Molina and an abundance of CGI. To be fair, Cage and Molina sell their millennium-old rivalry as sorcerers who trained at the foot of Merlin pretty well, but this just isn’t The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.
