After 14 years and countless rewrites, writer/director Diane English (Murphy Brown) has finally gotten it right. Based on George Cukors 1939 film starring Joan Crawford, The Women re-creates the catty banter that marked the original with another talented, all-female cast. Meg Ryan plays a confused socialite with an adulterous husband and a motley crew of screen-stealing eccentric friends (Annette Bening, Debra Messing and Jada Pinkett Smith). Eva Mendes manages to hold her own as the cold-hearted mistress who Crawford played in the original. Other all-stars, including Bette Midler, pop up to continue the estrogen-filled antics.
