This is the sort of maudlin romance that
youd think would be eschewed in a giant
totalitarian state like China. Basically, its
like the French films of the 80s: A woman
is torn between two men, and travels
each week on a train from town to town
and metaphor to metaphor. Lots of pretty,
gauzy moments and jumping around in
time and place give this the sheen of an
art film, but its little more than a romantic
comedy without laughs. In fact, Zhou
Yus Train is so humorless that it
actually makes you miss Adam Sandler
and Rob Schneider.
