Agave: Spirit Of A Nation
Part of the Agave Heritage Festival, this is a free screening of a documentary showing how one plant can affect the culture, art, cuisine and even worldview of nations. Broadway in Tucson: CATS. Ah, Cats. One of the most divisive musicals out there: You either love it or you hate it. You might not expect a musical about the internet’s favorite animal to garner anything other than praise, but some people just aren’t into it. But considering it’s won seven Tonys, has been translated into 15 languages and has set longevity records on both sides of the Atlantic (it ran for 21 years in London!), it’s the sort of thing that you really shouldn’t judge until you’ve seen it. Plus, most of the songs are straight up just T.S. Eliot poems. Worth checking out, no? The event will run Friday, May 3 through Sunday, May 5 and will include raffle prizes for people who adopt a pet.
Currently, there are 405 dogs and puppies and 112 cats and kittens at PACC that are in need of a family and a forever home. Make your holiday weekend one to remember and bring home your new best friend.
PACC is located at 4000 N. Silverbell Road, open Monday through Friday, noon - 7 p.m. and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends. All pets adopted will come spayed or neutered, with age-appropriate vaccinations, a microchip and a free vet visit. A $19 licensing fee will apply to dogs.

This weekend, May 4 and 5, Rillito Park will be transformed into an ice cream lover's paradise, and pretty much every kid's dream world. Unlimited ice cream, face painting, obstacle courses, bouncy houses, foam parties, food trucks and brain freezes for everyone.
The Brain Freeze Ice Cream Festival will highlight 21 different flavors of Blue Bell Premium Ice Cream as well as tastings from The Screamery, root beer floats from BJ's Brewhouse and vegan options from Cashew Cow.
The festival is a fundraiser for the Southern Arizona Network for Down Syndrome, SANDS. Brain Freeze festivals work to raise money for local Down Syndrome networks and to raise awareness of organizations who provide jobs, health, financial and educational services to those with mental, physical and emotional disabilities. The event runs Saturday and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Ticket pricing is $12 for adults 13 and over, kids four through 12 are $10, and three and under are free. Find more information about the festival on their website and facebook page.

Tucson-based nonprofit Save the Pets AZ will once again host its Win-A-Flight fundraiser this weekend.
The charity, which aims to save pets at risk of being euthanized in shelters around Tucson, will be giving away a Sunset Airplane ride over Tucson, featuring an experienced pilot and a free bottle of champagne.
Shelter Director Kay Garcia, who is in charge of the fundraiser, calls the event a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for dog and pet lovers.
"It's time to slip the surly bonds of earth and dance the sky on laughter-silvered wings," Garcia quoted poet John Gillespie Magee, Jr. in an email.
Interested? Purchase raffle tickets online at ThePetsAZ.com, with one ticket going for $8, or three for $20.
One winner will be selected this Saturday, May 4, giving one local person the chance to soar amongst the clouds, while supporting animals in-need at the same time.
